How Chipmunk Got His Stripes is a favorite book of ours. This Native American folk story is about teasing and bragging and is a great read out loud for the classroom or family. This book is highly relatable with and our kids absolutely love it.

I was  honored to be invited to my my niece’s first grade classroom as a mystery reader and was asked to bring a book that could be read out loud and shared with the class. You guessed it, How Chipmunk Got His Stripes by Joseph Bruchac and James Bruchac was the winner!

This tale is wildly colorful!  Characters like Bear, who is a boastful personality and thinks he can do anything – even keep the sun from rising.  Then there is little Brown Squirrel, who thinks differently and chooses to taunt bear. As the story points out, it is not good for anyone to tease a bear.
