Backpacks for Colombia #GivingTuesday

Participate this #GivingTuesday in Backpacks for Colombia. Mom’s Lifesavers is proud to participate in this drive for backpacks for the children of Santander, Colombia.

#GivingTuesday is a perfect day to show your children just how good it feels to give. There are many ways to make a difference in your community as well. Mom’s Lifesavers is highlighting a local drive in Newbury, Massachusetts, Backpacks for Colombia. This effort is founded by Colombia native and now Newbury resident, Obedia Doherty.

The goal is to collect 1,000 backpacks. These will be hand carried by Obedia and her family to Columbia in 2017. Backpacks are essentials for students that have long distances to travel to get to school.  Busing isn’t readily available, like it is for many of our children. Furthermore, backpacks help ease the burden of carrying supplies.

How You Can Help

Are you able to help?

It is easy.

  1. First, purchase a backpack
  2. Have your child include a drawing, picture or written note and place it inside the backpack for the lucky recipient to find. “The language is not a barrier but an opportunity to learn.”
  3. Find a drop off location near you.

There is a Backpacks for Colombia drop-off location at the Newbury Elementary School at 63 Hanover Street, Newbury, MA and one at Tokyo Joe’s Dojo, 141 Bridge Road, Salisbury, MA.

You can also support Backpacks for Colombia through GoFundMe. You can reach Obedia at obeida19@yahoo.com.

Follow Backpacks for Colombia on Facebook.

Thank you for your support!

Obedia’s Story

Hello, my name is Obeida Doherty. I moved to the United States from Santander, Colombia in 1998 and became a citizen in 2008.

I love to help children near my hometown of “La Belleza.” I’m assisted by the blessed generosity of friends, family, and many strangers with compassionate hearts for the needy.

Our family lives in Newbury, MA. Our boys, Andrew (10) and Jonathan (9), are students of Newbury Elementary School (N.E.S). Their walk from our house to school doesn’t take more than two minutes, and sometimes they even take the bus.

We are looking to help children whose journeys to school are more difficult than the ones our children have. Because many children find themselves on incredible journeys everyday to reach school, to receive an education. Due to long hours of walking through mountains and crossing over dangerous rivers carrying supplies is very difficult.

Our family, along with the support of the N.E.S. student council and the community, are looking to collect 1,000 NEW backpacks.

Together we can make a difference!

A new backpack will bring a smile to a child and  as a result, 1,000 backpacks will bring lots of happiness.

Include a drawing, picture or written note and place it inside the backpack for the lucky recipient to find. “The language is not a barrier but an opportunity to learn.”

Let’s teach our children compassion and the beauty of giving! THANK YOU!
